Deschutes County Fire District is composed of two major fire departments: Bend Fire District and The Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2.

Bend Fire District was establish on February 24, 1919 and currently has a Department Budget of $9,000,000.00. Bend Fire District is responsible for the city of Bend and the Deschutes Rural Fire Protection District No. 2. The District has a contract for protection with the District. Fire contracts include resorts, High Desert Museum, the Mt Bachelor ski area and private residences. The total fire protection area is 225 square miles. The Management staff is made up of the Fire Chief, three Deputy Chiefs, one EMS Coordinator, one Training Officer, one Fire Marshal/Deputy Chief and the three Battalion Chiefs, one for each shift, four fire inspectors, one seasonal inspector, and three secretaries. Personnel: 100; 80 career, 5 volunteers and 15 part-time members.

The Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2 was established in 1952 to provide fire prevention, protection, and suppression services to residents living outside municipalities and other areas in Deschutes County. The Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2 provides fire protection to 250 square miles within the County and represents approximately 20,000 constituents.

The District is governed by a five-member volunteer board of directors and a full-time, paid, administrative manager. A contract with the City of Bend provides the delivery of fire and emergency medical services to the district. The City of Bend Fire Department provides the District with physical services such as fire, EMS, transport, prevention, education, and hazardous materials response. The department's Emergency Medical Services Division is responsible for more than 1600 square miles and was chosen to receive the ALS Provider of the Year awards by the Oregon State Emergency Medical Technician in 1984.
